Adult bed bugs (Cimex lectularius) are flattened-broad-oval shape bodies about 4-5 mm long. They are reddish brown in color and are wingless. As bed bugs feed on blood from birds and mammals their bodies enlarge and turn red. They have 4 generations per year, laying 2-4 eggs at a time in cracks, crevices, and furniture. The eggs hatch in 6-17 days, they reach adulthood within two months at warm temperatures. Adults may live for several months without food.
Bed bugs emit a disagreeable odor, if a room is heavily infested there will usually be a strong characteristic odor that results from an oily, odorous material secreted by the bud bugs.
Under normal conditions, bed bugs feed at night. Their flat bodies allow them to hide in cracks in beds, besides furniture, dressers, wall boards, doors, window frames, behind pictures, under loose wallpaper, and in rooms near host sleeping areas. After feeding on the blood of a human, they will defecate, and this will appear as small black spots and will be found near their hiding place.
Bed bugs establish themselves primarily on or near beds or chairs where people rest, for a blood meal. They can travel 6 meters (20 ft) or more from an established harborage to find a blood meal. Upholstered chairs, mattresses, bed frames, and adjacent potential harborage sites such as behind baseboards, electrical outlets, cracks and crevices, and under loose carpets and curtains should be checked for bed bug infestations.
Rodents and rodent nesting sites (if detected) should also be removed from the home as they are alternate hosts for the bed bugs.
We recommend a professional inspection before treatment. The IPM approach is better than a traditional treatment to control bed bugs.
